One weekend in June 2009, Twitter was preparing an upgrade that would take the service offline for a few hours, when the U.S. State Department called. Delay the upgrade, officials at State requested, or risk jeopardizing an important means of political expression during daytime hours in Iran, just days before a presidential election there. Twitter complied. A State Department official explained to Reuters: “We highlighted to [Twitter] that this was an important form of communication . . . This is about giving their voices a chance to be heard.”Read Full Story
