In a recent interview with Safety Detectives, Luis Cordeiro, CEO and co-founder of Bydas, reflects on the journey that propelled his agency from a modest startup to a European leader in digital strategy and technology solutions (safetydetectives.com).
Founded in January 2010—after initial brainstorming while Luis was working at McCann Erickson in Barcelona—the decision to launch Bydas in Portugal was driven by both personal roots and strategic insight. Facing the rigid environment of traditional agencies, Luis and his brother José Cordeiro embarked on creating their own venture rooted in creative independence. At that time, digital agencies were a rarity in Portugal, and Bydas quickly carved its niche by adopting lean, bootstrapped practices and prioritizing SEO to stand out against larger competitors.
Bydas evolved by embracing technological possibilities—notably becoming one of Europe’s earliest Shopify Partners, and the first in Portugal, around 2011. This partnership became a growth engine, particularly during the surge of e-commerce triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. As consumer demand shifted online, Bydas’s Shopify expertise positioned the company not only as a trusted vendor in Portugal, but also as a highly recommended partner by Shopify itself across Spain and the UK.
Beyond e-commerce, the interview highlights Bydas’s strategic expansion back into digital communication. In summer 2024, the company launched projects like Packnode, and invested heavily in AI-assisted content creation to meet the growing demand for faster, scalable, and cost-efficient creative production. This early embrace of AI tools helped Bydas deliver innovative solutions in content and social media—reinforcing its leadership in an increasingly competitive landscape.
Luis also shared his perspectives on common pitfalls in digital marketing and ROI challenges—pointing to misaligned strategy, under-investment in SEO, and lack of agility. He advises businesses, especially startups and small teams, to prioritize planning over reaction, and to adopt intelligent tools like AI to scale without sacrificing creativity or effectiveness.
Through more than a decade in digital transformation, Bydas has grown from a micro-agency into a holistic partner blending strategy, e-commerce, content, and technology. Luis’s story underscores how vision, early adoption of platforms like Shopify, and smart use of AI can propel agencies to work with global brands while maintaining a rooted, agile approach.
